With the weather providing perfect habitats for a lot of insects it has been prime time for bug hunts. The children got the resources ready to calculate and keep a tally of the bugs they found. Clipboards, paper and pencils were shared, some had drawings and some had the names of different animals that may be spotted on their adventures, and off they went! A very engaging and popular activity amongst all ages, you could hear when they found something… “Look over here… quick come quick!” they would shout! Many insects were found, millipedes, centipedes, beetles, worms and slugs. We learnt the difference between a millipede and centipede too! Did you know centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment and millipedes have two? Millipedes are known to burrow and move slowly, whereas centipedes are fast!
This week brought us World Mental Health Day, where Young Minds charity organise a Hello Yellow Day to show young people and children they are not alone. Wearing yellow brings a little bit of sunshine to those who may need it. Our members of staff and Little Forest Folk-ers joined in the challenge to wear yellow! Some changed their high vis, others wore jumpers and a couple wore hair accessories. As a team, our educators worked to set up creative activities for the children to express a range of emotions. The children had large scale painting, musical instruments, pouring water and liquids and finally, making lava jars. We mixed washing up liquid, warm water and food colouring to create calming lava jars. Beads, shells and jewels were placed in the solution so when needing to regulate, children (and adults) can tip the jar upside down to see the motion of lava. I leave you with one final question, how are you? But really, how are you feeling?
