Twickenham - Winter is Finally Here!

This week in the forest, we learned about amazing trees! We admired how beautiful the trees looked against the frost and enjoyed the gifts it has given the forest for us to use.

In the middle of the meadow, we found a humongous pile of leaves. We couldn’t resist jumping in it, taking turns & enjoying the sensation of sinking into the pile and hearing the crisp crunch as we piled on it. We made leaf angels and threw handfuls in the air and watched with glee as red and orange frosty leaves floated down around us. We also had a burst of creativity using sticks to come up with fun and exciting games. We used long twigs as telescopes to look for missing treasure or turned them into wands to create some magic.

We also learned about how they start from a sleeping seed and what they need to grow into tall majestic trees that provide everyone with so many things. We looked around the forest searching for different types of seeds. We mostly found plane tree seeds because we suspect the squirrels have taken the other seeds and buried them in the ground for food in the winter.

We learned the parts of the tree and enjoyed a matching game where we looked for the other half of leaves to put together. We admired the intricate patterns of leaves by making leaf prints and we peered into cracks and crevices of the plane tree to see what insects are hiding within the bark or if we can see if there are any squirrels or birds that have made their homes in the hollows.

We ended the week with a fun cooking lesson where we made pizza to enjoy with our warm tea. The forest looked wonderful with the frost covering the grass and the ice hanging off the spider webs dangling between the benches. We’re so excited winter is finally here!

We’ll be back next time with more stories of our adventures in the forest.
