Twickenham - Winter Astronauts and Space Bowling!

Welcome back to the forest everyone, the children have all had a wonderful few weeks off with their families and loved ones. They have all been so excited to get back into the forest to see their favourite educators, friends and all the animals and birds.

Our friendly robins were thrilled to see us as they hovered at the edge of the snack circle, waiting to swoop in and pick up the crumbs from our oatcakes and flat breads.

This week our theme has been outer space and building up the fine motor control in our hands and fingers. With scissors carefully held in our small hands, we snipped along straight lines leading to pictures of space rockets. We snipped around images of planets while discussing Jupiter, Mars, Uranus and Earth. White board pens and paint brushes have also enhanced our mark-making skills.

In our loose parts zone, we built a massive spaceship with supermarket crates, planks of wood, and milk bottle tops as knobs for our controls. Our Little Forest Folk-ers all climbed aboard and zoomed off to Mars, via Waterloo. A few of our empty milk bottles were strapped together and converted into jet packs allowing our astronauts to strap them on their backs and float around outside the spaceship fixing the various broken bits where the ship had been hit by meteors.

We invented a great game of space bowling, using some small cups to represent spaceships. The children carefully stood each cup up on the ground in a triangle formation, then standing back with bean bags in hand we aimed and threw our missiles at the spaceships knocking them down. We cheered loudly as some of our space children developed the finesse of throwing a bean bag and scoring a strike.

Our space and moon-based story books have delighted the children’s imagination and learning, and our space, moon and alien songs have been learnt and sung with gusto as we race around the forest in the beautiful, crisp, golden winter, sunshine.

A wonderful week, we can’t wait for more adventures next week!
