Twickenham - Collecting treasures

Our Week in the Forest...

“What’s this?” shouted a child a child one day early this week as they peered down onto the ground. A rounded, beautifully decorated piece of ceramic tried to break the surface of the mud underfoot. A small crowd gathered around and Dejan and Miranda had an idea for an activity to build on this interest. Children donned their cutting gloves and with trowels in hand began to carefully uncover many pieces of all different shapes, sizes and colours. They used the trowels to transport the pieces into a cardboard box.

The next day, the children wanted to revisit their discoveries so Dejan had a tray of water and a brush and some dry clothes and the children were able to take each piece, place it in the tray of water and use the brush to wash off the mud. They then dried each piece and looked at them more closely. They looked at the different shapes, painted patterns and talked about where they came from. Some tile glue was found and the children set about helping Dejan create a mosaic with the pieces. This will be an on going project and the mosaic now represents a collection of treasures that were discovered by curious minds.

The children have been loving the “We are Going on a Bear Hunt” story book this week so Linn has been recreating the story with the children. They have been "swishy swoshing" their way through imaginary rivers, "squelch squirting" their way through (very real) mud, and "stumble tripping" through forests. This was a brilliant opportunity to take small groups of children for an adventure walk towards the back of our site and something truly amazing was discovered.

A large hole in a tree didn’t reveal a hiding bear...but an egg! Immediately the children began to speculate that this must be a dinosaur egg and its mum and dad were at work. After helping to take some photographs of their discovery they partially recovered the hole in the tree and tiptoed back towards site. However, it has been agreed “we WILL go on a bear hunt again!”

Wishing you all a super weekend and we will see you all next week!
