Putney Heath - Caterpillar Chaos

Caterpillar Chaos

The beginning of June has certainly bought with it some hotter weather and it has been wonderful to see the new learning opportunities which have been created here at Putney Heath. This has been joined with some familiar faces returning to the Heath with our happy holiday campers joining us again!

We began our exploring fully rested from our bank holiday weekend still amazed by the vast number of caterpillars that currently decorate our forest. The children have thoroughly enjoyed noticing the variety of different colours of green and various features of the caterpillars. We have learnt a lot about those which are safe to watch and those which we need to keep away from.

The unique movements of the caterpillars have encouraged us to explore how our bodies move, experimenting to see if we can move in similar ways. We also used an obstacle course to challenge our bodies, starting at the top, taking risks over wobbly logs and landing a triumphant jump at the end!

Finding so many caterpillars has sparked curiosity in our little forest folk-ers as they have been eager to hunt for other mini beasts. A group of children found a slug which appeared to be still and drying up from the hot weather. We decided to put some water on it and it soon came back into action, sliding over the log. It was great to watch the way the slug moved and also the shiny slime it left behind.

We hope you have all enjoyed the warmer weather this week and we cannot wait for more forest findings next week when our sessional children return! Have a wonderful weekend!
